EU OS: An Operating System for the European Public Sector
EU OS is an operating system concept specifically designed for the public sector in Europe. Although it is still in its early stages, it aims to become a project supported by the European Commission.
In reality, rather than a new operating system, EU OS is a proof of concept based on Fedora Linux. Its goal is to provide a common desktop environment and an efficient method for managing software, devices, users, and data in the public sector.
One of its key features is adaptability. It allows the application of customized layers at national, regional, or institutional levels, making it easier to implement in various administrations and organizations. This also helps establish a clear and transparent hierarchy of responsibilities.
EU OS promotes an open-source approach, ensuring digital sovereignty and the ability to function on both new and older hardware. Its vision is to offer a viable alternative to commercial systems like Windows, with a migration goal of two years.
Currently, the project is developed by a community of enthusiasts and volunteers. However, its ultimate goal is to gain the support of the European Commission for wider implementation.
