Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS is now available
Canonical has released Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS, the second maintenance update for the extended support version Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Noble Numbat).
This release provides an updated installation image for those who wish to install Ubuntu 24.04 LTS without the need to download multiple updates after installation. Additionally, it introduces hardware compatibility improvements thanks to the new Linux kernel 6.11 and the Mesa 24.2 graphics stack, both taken from Ubuntu 24.10 (Oracular Oriole).
While Ubuntu 24.04 and 24.04.1 used kernel 6.8, this new version improves support for more recent hardware. However, its main goal is to bundle security updates and bug fixes since August 2024, ensuring a more stable installation.
For those already using Ubuntu 24.04 LTS or 24.04.1 LTS, the recommendation is to simply update their systems rather than reinstalling.
Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS is available for download in Desktop, Server, and other official variants such as Kubuntu, Xubuntu, and Lubuntu. You can get it on the official Ubuntu download page: ubuntu.com/download.
The next maintenance release, Ubuntu 24.04.3 LTS, is scheduled for August 2025. It is expected to include an even larger update with a newer kernel and graphics improvements from Ubuntu 25.04 (Plucky Puffin), which will be released on April 17, 2025.
Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Noble Numbat) will be supported until June 2029. For those seeking the latest in kernel and graphics, they can opt for Ubuntu 24.10 or wait for the arrival of Ubuntu 25.04.
